It’s Labor Day. I once titled an exhibition in Vienna ‘Labor Day’ and many of the paintings in the show were of people working. While I was working on the show I remembered an incident with my New York dealer years earlier. I had brought a Miami picture to the gallery, it was a South Beach street scene and when my dealer looked at it he said: “The only thing that interests me in this painting is the figure in the top left corner.” I disagreed with his observation but I was pleased with that figure in the top left corner. So while working on my show for Vienna and recalling that earlier conversation I got an idea. The figure in the top left corner would no longer be a bit player in a picture, he would have the leading role.
